Dracaena fragrans 'Massangeana'
(Also known as Corn Plant)
Dracaena fragrans 'Massangeana' is a popular, low-maintenance indoor plant known for its tall cane-like stems and striking yellow-green striped leaves. The foliage grows in rosettes along the stem, adding height and a tropical feel to any space. It’s a great choice for homes, offices, and commercial interiors, as it tolerates lower light and infrequent watering.
Size:
Can grow up to 4–6 feet tall indoors (1.2–1.8 m) over time.
Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates low light. Too much direct sunlight may cause leaf scorch.
Water:
Water when the top 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) of soil is dry. Avoid overwatering; ensure proper drainage.
Pet-safe:
❌ Toxic to pets (can cause vomiting, drooling, and lack of appetite in cats and dogs), according to the ASPCA.

- Trim the Stems – Use sharp scissors or a knife to cut about 1-2 inches (2-5 cm) off the stems at a 45-degree angle. This helps the flowers absorb water more efficiently.
- Remove Extra Leaves – Remove any leaves that will be submerged in water to prevent bacterial growth.
- Use Clean Water – Fill a clean vase with fresh, lukewarm water. Avoid using very cold or hot water.
- Change the Water Regularly – Refresh the water every 2 days and re-trim the stems to ensure optimal hydration.
- Add Flower Food – If provided, add the flower food to the water to nourish the flowers and slow bacterial growth. If you don’t have flower food, you can mix a teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of lemon juice or vinegar into the water.
- Keep in a Cool Spot – Place the vase in a cool, shaded area away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts. Avoid placing flowers near ripening fruits, as they release ethylene gas, which can shorten the lifespan of flowers.
- Remove Wilting Flowers – Regularly remove any wilted or dead flowers to prevent bacteria from spreading to the healthy ones.
